Prenato Summer Guide: Sun Exposure During Pregnancy
18 June 2019
It is now well known that the risk of high sun exposure is not to be taken lightly. Adequate protection is necessary to protect your skin, especially during pregnancy!
Sun protection: Protecting yourself from UVA/UVB rays is simple—a good sun protection is all you need. We recommend a protection greater than SPF 30. Remember to put on sunscreen regularly, as this is often what we forget to do. If you only wear sunscreen in the morning and spend the day outside, your protection is not optimal.
Covering up: It is ideal to wear a hat during prolonged sun exposure to avoid “heat stroke”. If you don’t have a hat, choose a spot under a parasol or in the shade of a tree. The temperature will be more pleasant.
Pregnancy mask (melasma): Hormonal fluctuations also have a great influence on the appearance of your skin. During the summer, the sun can amplify the effect of a pregnancy mask. A pregnancy mask consists of pigmented plaques that appear mainly on the face and can remain there for up to 6 months after delivery. Good sun protection and wearing a hat can help reduce the risk of having such a mask.
Hydration: Hydration is the key to a pleasant sunny day considering that a pregnant woman’s water needs are high. On a hot day, the body dehydrates quickly. So drink plenty of liquids! A diet rich in carbohydrates and protein is ideal to maintain a good energy level. You are breastfeeding? These tips are definitely for you as well!
Remember that you are the best person to understand and listen to your body! Do not hesitate to sit down if necessary to avoid feeling uncomfortable because of heat. Opt for air conditioning or fresh fan air if warm outside air is not suitable for you. Listen to your body, protect it, hydrate it and above all … Have a great summer!
